Parent Resources & Safety Tips

Information and guidance to help you support your child's safe and productive use of ThatTutorBot

Welcome, Parents & Guardians

We understand that keeping children safe online is a top priority. This page provides resources, tips, and information to help you guide your child's use of ThatTutorBot and ensure they have a positive, safe learning experience.

ThatTutorBot is designed with child safety in mind, but your involvement and guidance are essential for creating the best possible experience.

Understanding Content Moderation

How It Works

ThatTutorBot automatically checks everything your child types and everything the AI responds with to make sure it's safe and appropriate.

When your child sends a message: If what they type triggers our safety checks, the message is immediately blocked and you receive an email notification right away. This helps you stay informed about what your child is trying to ask or share.

When the AI responds: We also check every response the AI generates before your child sees it. If the AI tries to say something inappropriate, we block that response and the AI will try again with something safer and more appropriate.

What Gets Flagged

Our system flags content that contains:

  • Harassment or bullying language
  • Hate speech or discriminatory content
  • Violent content or threats
  • Sexual content
  • Self-harm references
  • Personal information sharing

What Happens When Content Is Flagged

When your child's message triggers our safety checks:

  • Your child's message is immediately blocked and not sent to the AI
  • You receive an email notification right away with details about what was detected
  • The email explains why the content was flagged and what you can do next
  • Your child sees a friendly message explaining why their message couldn't be processed

Talking to Your Child About Online Safety

Use Moderation Alerts as Teaching Moments

When you receive a moderation alert, consider it an opportunity to discuss:

  • Why certain language or content isn't appropriate online
  • The importance of treating others with respect
  • How to express feelings and thoughts appropriately
  • The difference between online and offline communication

Set Clear Expectations

Before your child uses ThatTutorBot, discuss:

  • What ThatTutorBot is for (learning, homework help, vocabulary practice)
  • What language and topics are appropriate
  • That you'll be notified if inappropriate content is detected
  • That you'll review their activity together regularly

Encourage Open Communication

Let your child know they can come to you with questions or concerns about anything they encounter online. Create an environment where they feel comfortable discussing their online experiences.

Monitoring Your Child's Activity

Analytics Dashboard

Access your child's activity through the Analytics Dashboard, where you can view:

  • Usage statistics and learning progress
  • Recent activity and session history
  • Vocabulary words learned and reviewed
  • Writing submissions and feedback

Regular Check-Ins

We recommend reviewing your child's activity regularly. This helps you:

  • Stay informed about what they're learning
  • Identify any patterns or concerns early
  • Celebrate their progress and achievements
  • Guide them toward productive use of the platform

Teaching Digital Citizenship

Key Concepts

Help your child understand:

  • Respect: Treat others online the same way you would in person
  • Privacy: Never share personal information (name, address, school, etc.)
  • Responsibility: Your words and actions online have consequences
  • Critical Thinking: Not everything online is true or appropriate
  • Balance: Use technology as a tool for learning, not just entertainment

Resources for Further Learning

Consider exploring these topics together:

Safety Tips

  • Keep login credentials private: Don't share your child's password with others

  • Report concerns: If you notice anything concerning, contact our support team immediately

When to Be Concerned

Self-Harm Content

If you receive a notification about self-harm content, this is a critical situation that requires immediate attention. Please take the following steps:

  • Reach out to your child immediately - Talk to them calmly and let them know you're there to help
  • If there is immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000) - This is Australia's emergency services number

  • Text Lifeline: 0477 13 11 14 - Text support available 24/7

Additional Resources:
